Fema Releases Preliminary Flood Maps For Cochise County Communities

COCHISE COUNTY — The Federal Emergency Management Agency has released preliminary flood maps for Cochise County and the cities of Bisbee, Benson, Douglas and Tombstone, identifying updated flood hazards along multiple waterways in the region.

The revised Flood Insurance Rate Maps, known as FIRMs, reflect updated flood risk information developed in coordination with Cochise County officials. FEMA said the maps are intended to help local building officials, contractors and property owners make informed decisions about mitigation measures and construction standards.

A 90-day appeal period for the preliminary maps will run from Feb. 26 through May 27, 2026. During that time, residents and business owners may challenge the flood hazard determinations if they can provide supporting technical or scientific data, such as detailed hydraulic or hydrologic analyses.

Flood hazards can change over time due to factors including weather patterns, erosion and community development. FEMA and Cochise County officials said the updated maps are designed to more accurately reflect current flood risks.

The revised maps could affect future building requirements and flood insurance obligations for property owners in designated areas.

The mapping effort is part of FEMA's nationwide initiative to improve understanding of flood risks and reduce the impact of flooding on new and substantially improved structures.
