LEWISBURG — Flood insurance premiums in Lewisburg are set to be discounted by 15 percent.

Shannon Berkey, the community development grant manager in Lewisburg, said the borough was recently informed by the Department of Homeland Security and Federal Emergency Management Agency that the borough will increase to a Class 7 in the National Flood Insurance Program Community Rating System.

This means most NFIP flood insurance policies, issued or renewed on or after April 1, 2027, will receive a 15 percent discount on the premium.

This savings is a direct result of the flood mitigation activities implemented by the borough to protect lives and reduce property damage, Berkey said.

“Involvement in the CRS program solidifies Lewisburg Borough Council’s support of floodplain management activities and the commitment of borough resources to protect lives and reduce property damage”, Berkey said. “Some of the activities completed by the borough included in the program are outreach projects, flood protection information assistance, open space preservation, stormwater management, floodplain management planning and drainage system maintenance, just to name a few.”

The NFIP CRS is a national, voluntary program developed by FEMA for recognizing and encouraging community floodplain management activities that exceed minimum NFIP standards. A community’s participation in the CRS program allows property owners within the community who purchase NFIP flood insurance to realize a discount on their flood insurance premium. This discount is based on the classification received following a full verification of all activities within the program implemented by the community. The discounts incentivize communities to maintain existing floodplain management efforts and implement new flood protection measures that help save lives and property during floods. Program participation requires annual recertification and a five-year field verification.

The borough’s “commitment enhances public safety, property protection and protects the natural functions of floodplains, and reduces flood insurance premiums,” FEMA CRS Program Manager Shilpa Mulik said.

Lewisburg partners with SEDA-Council of Governments, Central Keystone-Council of Governments and PennCore Consulting LLC to implement CRS activities and adhere to the guidelines of the program, Berkey said.
