Older California Drivers Can Get A Discount On Car Insurance. How To Qualify
Looking for a way to lower your car insurance payment?
California law requires car insurance companies to offer a discount to eligible older drivers.
Here’s who qualifies and how much you could save:
Under California Insurance Code, drivers 55 and older are eligible for a car insurance discount after completing a "mature driver improvement course provided for and approved” by the California Department of Motor Vehicles.
Some insurance companies also offer discounts to younger drivers who complete a defensive driving course, according to Cefali & Cefali Personal Injury Lawyers in San Juan Capistrano.
“This shows your insurer that you are committed to safe habits, which may help lower your insurance costs,” the law firm said.
Drivers should check with their insurer to see whether they are eligible.
To receive the discount, you’ll need to complete a DMV-approved Mature Driver Improvement Program.
According to AARP, the course reviews current traffic laws, safe driving habits and defensive driving techniques through lessons, videos and other learning materials.
After completing the course, you’ll receive a certificate that can be submitted to your insurance company to qualify for the discount.
California law requires that drivers complete the course every three years to continue receiving the discount.
Insurance companies can remove the discount before the three-year period ends if you are found at fault in a crash, according to California’s Insurance Code.
You can also lose the discount if you are convicted of certain moving traffic violations. or are cited for an alcohol- or drug-related driving offense, the code says.
According to California DMV-licensed Mature Driver Tune-Up, drivers 55 and older can save an average of 15% — or about $90 — a year on car insurance after completing a Mature Driver Improvement Course.
“The amount of your discount will depend upon your driving record, your insurance company, and other factors,” Mature Driver Tune-Up said.
To find out how much of a discount you could receive, contact your insurer for more information.
