(nc) Can My Boss Refuse To Accommodate Reasonable Restrictions From A Doctors Note?
Location: North Carolina
(To start, idk if disability issues is the right tag, mods please let me know)
Hi yall! 26F, been at my job since late october 2025. I have semi-work related carpal tunnel and de quervains (pretty much thumb carpal tunnel). I say semi because I also do crochet infrequently which has caused flare ups before.
My job requires me to use my thumb often, repeatedly, and with force. I cannot do my main job without my thumb. However, I can do the work in my secondary position with minimal thumb use.
With the de quervains, I am going to an orthopedics soon where they will almost certainly do steroid injections, which have a 24-48 hour minimum rest period after to let the medication settle. Depending on how I react to that, I may also need physical therapy.
I talked to my boss and told her about the rest period and she said if I miss one more day, I will be fired, but suggested I can schedule it further out/delay treatment until I can schedule PTO to use for it.
My legal question: can I be fired/can my boss refuse to accommodate my doctors restrictions when I do return? Say my doctor says 48 hours rest then take it easy for a week; I technically can do my secondary position with no problem. But my secondary has someone in that position daily and for them its their primary position. So by accommodating my restrictions, it would not hurt anyone, but will 100% annoy the primary.
What do I do if she refuses to accommodate? If I am told to rest or it will make it worse, it becomes a choice of possible permanent damage or losing my job. Legally, what can I do?
