[nc] Landlord Charging For Full Apartment Carpet Replacement For Damage In One Bedroom?
Location: North Carolina
So basically I'm on a joint lease for a 3-bedroom apartment. One roommate moved out and left damage to the carpet in their bedroom. I have a new roommate moving into that room, so I emailed the landlord asking if the carpet could be repaired/replaced and offering to pay for it.
The landlord is now saying they won't replace it without replacing carpet for the entire unit, and we’ll be charged for the whole thing even though that bedroom is separated from the rest of the apartment by wood flooring (it’s not continuous carpet), and the damage is only in that one room. Their justification is that they need the carpet to "match".
This is kind of ridiculous right? The carpet is about 6-7 years old for reference, and it has been damaged by flooding twice in the time we've lived here (not our fault) so they would've needed to replace it when we moved out anyways. I haven't gotten the quote yet but it really feels like they're trying to screw me. It's very frustrating after I tried to be considerate about the situation by reaching out to them about it.
Here's a picture of the damage:
