(nv) Employer Creating Impossible Hours
Location: Nevada
I work at a bar in a hotel. I signed on as a bartender at this particular bar. I’ve been there for two years. The hotel has a few bars/restaurants and they are distinctly separate with different employees.
The Director of F&B has decided to create a pop-up bar on-property but it’s not a part of the bar that I work at. He wants the bar to be open at 8 am. Employees who usually work at 5 pm are being told they have to come in at least one day a week at 7:30 am.
All the bartenders at this bar hate this. Everyone works late, some of us have two jobs. One bartender is a parent who says they can’t drop off their kid anywhere before 8 am, making the schedule impossible for them.
What options do we have? One manager who is on our side pointed out that the contract we signed on specifically stated that we are bartenders at the specific bar, not the pop-up bar. He doesn’t think the hours are fair either. He said the F&B director said that they will keep hiring until they find employees who will do what they want, insinuating that they could fire the ones who don’t want to work that early or who simply can’t work that early.
