A Detective Called And Wants Me To Come In. Do I Get A New Jersey Criminal Attorney First?
Trying to stay calm but a detective left a voicemail this morning asking me to 'come in and clear a few things up' and I've been shaking since. I don't even know what it's about. He was friendly, said it's nothing serious. Every part of me wants to just go in and explain whatever it is.
But something feels off. The questions I can't stop spinning on
- If I didn't do anything, do I still need a New Jersey criminal attorney just to walk in and talk?
- Does lawyering up make me look guilty? That's my big fear.
- Do I even have to go in at all if I'm not under arrest?
- What if I say something totally innocent and it gets twisted?
My mom says don't go in without talking to someone first. My friend says I'm being paranoid. Super helpful, both of them. Everything I read says that 'friendly chat' framing is the point, and you can be polite and still say you'd like a lawyer present. He wants me in this week, is it normal to ask an attorney to actually come with me, and how fast can someone get up to speed before then?
