A Friend, Who's Here Legally On A Work Permit, Is Being Held At Us/canada Border
Location: Buffalo, NY
My parents and their friend traveled from Michigan to Buffalo, NY to see the Niagara Falls (only from the US side). Today, as they were heading back to their hotel, the friend who was driving, didn't understand the sign instructions and had missed the "US only" exit. As they tried to figure out how to get out, they came close to the bridge/border, and that was when they stopped immediately and pulled over (they have never reached the canadian border). Lucky for them there was a cop nearby so they asked him to help, he then got in his car and turned on the lights and started guiding them, and he led them to the border control.
There, my parents and the friend were asked to show all IDs and passports and documents, and then later they got led to a building. Ultimately my parents were let go bc they're citizens but the friend was not, he's a Colombian currently on a valid work permit to work in the US. The whole time my dad was helping this friend translated but the cop and the border officer kept asking him why he was taking while they're not talking to him, they were having attitudes and tried to stop my dad from translating. They then led the friend into a room and said they would keep the friend from now on, my dad freaked out and said he can't speak english well, that he won't be able to explain himself. The border officer said he can speak spanish, then just took the friend away. My parents started crying and trying to explain to the ppl there that it was a genuine mistake, he didn't try to enter Canada illegally, and that they were just not used to the road around New York and once they realized they were at a wrong path, they immediately stopped and asked for help. But after 4 hours there, they only allowed my dad to come in to talk to the friend for 3' and then got kicked out again.
Currently, the friend's wife has been informed about it and will work contact a lawyer asap on monday. But is there anything my parents, who are still in Buffalo, can do? They literally took him away and all of his personal items and documents, did not say a single word as to what they are gonna do with him or where they are gonna take him, he also will have no way to contact his family unless they let him phone or talk to someone. My parents are extremely confused and have been calling around to ask for help since it'll be a while until the lawyer reach back on monday...
