A Marijuana Plant Popped Up In My Front Yard. What Are The Legal Parameters Here?

Card image cap

Location: Washington State.

We moved into this house about 4-5 months ago, it's a rental. There are plants in the front yard that the landlord request we keep watered, and we have been. There's a couple of stray plants around the intended garden that I've watered as well, curious to see what comes up.

Lo and behold, a marijuana plant has come up near the garden. Not in the garden, like I don't think it was intentionally planted by the landlord.

Aside from it being kind of hilarious, I want to know what to do with the plant now, and what I CAN do legally. I'm a bit confused about the growing laws here for personal and recreational use. My husband and I don't use, but we have family members who do, and I feel like this could lead to some fun gifts around holiday time, like fresh homemade edibles or something. Then when googling how to take care of the plant, it came up that it might not be legal to grow without certain licenses, etc. But again, the plant already just .. exists here now. If it is illegal to grow marijuana for personal use at one's home, can we get in trouble for the plant being in our yard even though we had nothing to do with it?

In general, what are the legal ways we can proceed here?
