Airline Lost My Luggage And Refuses To Fairly Compensate Me

American Airlines lost my luggage over a month ago. Now they’re offering me $359 for a bag worth well over $2,000.

I’m hoping someone here can give me some advice because I genuinely don’t know where to go from here.

American Airlines lost my luggage over a month ago. I have followed every instruction I was given, submitted the required forms and documentation, spent grueling hours dealing with baggage claim and tried to do everything possible to locate my bag.

At this point, I’m being told American wants to offer me $359 as a PARTIAL reimbursement for my lost luggage, even though the contents of the bag were worth well over $1,500-$2,000.

The $369 in receipts they are basing this off of was NOT the value of my luggage.

The receipts totaling approximately $369 that I submitted after 5 days of my luggage missing were for items I had already purchased before my trip.

I provided those receipts as proof that specific items belonged to me and were in my luggage - things such as shaving cream, conditioner, shampoo, creatine, and other personal items. Obviously, though, I cannot provide a receipt for every article of clothing, every pair of shoes, every hair tool, and every personal item I have accumulated over several years.

These receipts were submitted as supporting documentation of ownership, NOT as a calculation of the total value of everything in my luggage.

For example, if American were to locate a bag containing those items, I could use the receipts to establish that those particular items belonged to me. The receipts were evidence supporting the contents of my luggage. They were never intended to suggest that the entire contents of my luggage were worth $369.

My luggage contained essentially all of my clothing, shoes, hair tools, toiletries, and other personal belongings. The total value of everything that was lost was well over $2,000. I was advised by numerous American Airlines agents to purchase replacements for the things I needed from my luggage, submit the receipts after 30 days of the missing date, and that I would be reimbursed.
So I did exactly what I was told and spent approximately $1,500 replacing items that were in my lost luggage because I was relying on the information I was given by American representatives.

Now,

My luggage is officially “lost” and no longer being searched for.
I have spent approximately $1,500 replacing necessities.
I have lost belongings worth well over $1,500–$2,000.
I submitted documentation and followed the instructions I was given.
And American is now offering me $359 as a partial reimbursement- claiming that they cannot review receipts submitted after the 30 days. But that’s when I was initially instructed to submit them!!!!!

I feel like I am being penalized for their mistake!!!!!

This has been incredibly emotionally distressing. Some of the things in that bag are not simply replaceable. They are personal belongings that I owned for years and that have significant sentimental value.

I’m not expecting special treatment or trying to get something I’m not entitled to.

I am asking American to actually review my claim based on the circumstances and the evidence I provided, rather than treating the $369 in receipts I initially submitted as though they represented the total value of my luggage.

Baggage claim is currently refusing to review my case again, and I don’t know what my next step should be.

Has anyone dealt with a similar situation with American Airlines? What did you do when they refused to reconsider a lost-baggage claim?

At this point, I am just trying to figure out how to get someone to actually look at the facts of my case, take accountability, and give me a fair resolution.
