Assault Lawsuit

Card image cap

Location: Utah

I was pretty brutally assaulted 2.5 years ago, and the assailant was just convicted of 2 felonies after pleading no contest. Sentencing has still yet to happen but I want to get ahead of it.

While the assailant will already be responsible for medical leading up to the trial due to a victim advocacy program, I lost incredible amounts of money outside of medical.

I was displaced from my home, lost my career and will never be able to work in the same field due my injuries so I’ve had to pivot and now earn significantly less, and due to being essentially incoherent for over a year, I lost more money to an ongoing divorce that I just couldn’t manage and ended up losing everything when I didn’t show up to court, had a storage unit in a different state (divorce nonsense) I had planned to drive down to in order to empty the week I was assaulted but ended up not being able to clean out for several years costing nearly 4k per year, had to pawn jewelry to manage bills while I was unable to work which ended up costing thousands before I was able to pay to get my jewelry back as they charged a monthly fee, lost belongings while bouncing from friends house to friends house before I was able to get an apartment again, couldn’t afford to keep up my car insurance and that has added thousands to my car loan despite the car being parked inside a private garage as I couldn’t drive anyways, and my car insurance now costs significantly more due to the lapse, not to mention I will now have ongoing medical bills for the rest of my life.

How do I go about a civil suit and what can I realistically ask for? Do I have a case?
