Aurora, Colorado: High School Student Shined Laser In My Eye, What Should I Do Legally?

Card image cap

Location: Aurora, Colorado

I substituted (contract work) for a class of 9th graders today. One student had a laser pointer and I told him multiple times to stop before he points it at someone’s eye. Well, said student intentionally points it at my right eye and I can see the color of the laser in my eye. It’s been 5 hours and I’m starting to see some dark spots in my eye, and I’ve read that with lasers your vision can deteriorate days later as the eye tries to heal.

I am now wondering how do I proceed if I start losing vision in my eye, I’m planning to go to the optometrist tomorrow or soon to check if it did any real damage and I would like to at the very least be able to bill the school, or the students family for the optometrist bill. If my vision were to unfortunately get worse I’d like ideas on how to proceed legally, I’d like to know if this means I should sue the school? Or should I sue the family? Thanks!
