Being Interrogated/investigated About A Homicide I Had Nothing To Do With
Location: New Braunfels, TX
On June 4th at around 11 pm my fiancée was shot to death at a stoplight on the way back to our apartment after finishing her shift as a ICU nurse. Obviously I am and was devastated but that’s not the point of this post.
On June 6th the sheriff’s office called me in and were like the husband/boyfriend is always a suspect, over 40% of murders are committed by someone the victim knows. They said that they just had to ask me some questions rule me out then they would get the real guy. I believed them. They asked me where I was that night, etc. I told them. They asked if they could see the security footage from my apt complex, I said sure (it shows me entering my place after work around 7pm and not coming out until 6am, just like I said). They asked if they could search my apartment and car and also look at my phone, I said sure. They also took a gunshot residue test from my palm, it was negative.
Fast forward to yesterday. It’s now been almost a month. They called me in, and their tone had completely changed. They said look it’s been a month and we investigated and don’t know who did it, and just statistically it’s more likely it was you than a random person. Then they were like even if you didn’t pull the trigger we think you’re involved in some way. I said what are you talking about? And they were like we’ve seen your texts, y’all had argued before. We had—but I mean about trivial stuff they used the example of me and her arguing over text in March about where to eat in New Orleans. They then noted I owned several rifles, which I do, they are all legally owned. These are bolt action rifles used for whitetail deer hunting, but they said owning them and having pictures of deer I killed on social media shows a propensity to commit violence (I have no criminal record). They then grilled me for several hours repeating TX is a death penalty state, that if I confess the judge will go lighter on me, and that I was showing no remorse. They’ve also succeeded in making her parents hate me, because they told them they suspected I was involved. It’s a terrible situation.
There’s no one in the history of ever that has never gotten into an argument with their spouse or significant other. Tens of millions of people own a gun in this country. They never said anything like have evidence you were there, or we have texts showing you were involved, etc. They basically were like well we have looked into it, don’t know who did it, and 40% of murders are committed by someone the victim knows, therefore you did it. They let me go but now I’m like freaking out I have no idea what to say to them.
Which leads me to my question. Should I get a lawyer? I am hesitant to because then that makes me look like I’m guilty hell or hiding something
