Being Sued After A Fire With No Insurance
Location: Pennsylvania
Back in November my dad had a house fire. His house in particular, is not habitable at this time. the first started in the walls (there was no power for blocks due to a truck hitting the transformer for a few hours. There was surge in power then suddenly the house caught fire.) it cause damage to the house directly attached (townhouse). Unfortunately, my dad paid his house off that same year and he was unaware that it would end his homeowners insurance. So he had no insurance.
The fire was in November, fast forward to today of February 2026. He received a letter from his insurance company stating their intent to pursue him for the damages about 20k worth.
We do not have the fire report yet. I will be requesting it Monday.
My dad does not have an attorney. He hasn't seen the letter yet, he will find out tomorrow when I bring it to him.
The only repair done to his house so far is the roof. (yay winter)
Where do we even begin? My dad is in 70s and hes been so down since the fire, this is just about to make it worse.
He does not want to lose the house. I would buy it before I let him.
