Boss Played A “prank” On Me In Front Of Office By Accusing Me Of R*pe, Then Says It Was A Joke. What’s Next?

Location: Atlanta, GA.

For context, she is the Chief Nursing Officer of a major hospital and I am a specialized Nurse Consultant who shares office space with her.

Recently she was frustrated with my performance during a meeting with administration— I didn’t speak “aggressively enough,” or “drive the point home”.

So two days later, she comes into my office and has a letter in her hands. She says its for me, and begins reading it. The rest of my coworkers are listening too. “Hello, I am \[patient\] from XX hospital, and I just had to let you know that your nurse \[me\] was convicted of felony rape last year…” She says some more stuff then stops, busts out laughing, and asks me “Aren’t I horrible?”

I told her on the spot that was extremely uncomfortable and she told me to “toughen up, and take a joke.”

I did not immediately go to HR because she manages HR and frequently has them spill names and details about issues that involve her (we share an office). So I consulted an attorney, and they told me I HAD to go to HR to have a chance at this case.

Is this true? I feel like this, alongside the other egregious things she said (Told me directly to never fuck with her three times, told me I was the skinniest and most emaciated of my coworkers) should be enough to get something done— but what do I know. Thoughts?
