Bought A Car And Discovered Possible Odometer Fraud

Location: Los Angeles

My partner recently bought a used car that was listed as having 127k miles on it from a dealer that flips cars. The other day she stumbled across the service records over the years in one of the manuals and the last entry from 2019 had 171k miles. We did some further digging from there (CARFAX and AutoCheck - she used a different reporting service prior to buying the car and nothing alarming came up and needless to say we won’t be using that service again) and found the car had been regularly serviced and with mileage was consistently reported, with the mileage being reported earlier this year as having 207k miles.

Now the title/dealer transaction record, which was mailed to her, shows the vehicle as having been to sold to Carmax with 127k miles on 4/13, but the Autocheck report shows the car having been auctioned off by Carmax on 4/20 with 207k miles. The dealer she bought the car from were the buyers at the auction.

I guess the question is if there’s anything she can do to get her money back or if she’s going to have to chalk this up to an expensive lesson? In mind, it appears that CarMax did something to the vehicle’s odometer given the mileage discrepancies between the title and the reporting, which is illegal. I also find it strange that the CarMax transferred the car internally multiple times based on the Dealer Transaction record on the title. That being said, I don’t know if she has to take this up with the dealer she bought it from or if there’s anything she can even do. Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thank you!
