Buyers Of Our Previous House Is Trying To Sue Us 1 Year After Purchase.

First time poster (M 26) cause I've never had to deal with this.

So my wife, Josie (F 31) got a call from our realtor, Sarah, yesterday. Sarah explained that the people we sold our house to were trying to contact us to sue because we did not inform them that a well was on the property.

The people we bought that house from did not inform us that there was a well on the property and we had no clue that it was there. The well is just a 1" pipe sticking out of the concrete in the basement with nothing attached to it and no signs telling us what it was. We thought random pipe, probably best not to mess with it.

It was only until the inspector (they payed for) informed us and the buyers that there was a well there. We signed a paper that said there was a well on the property (we have our copy) and the buyers were supposed to sign a paper saying that they acknowledge that there is a well on the property. The thing is, the buyers realtor did not give them this paper to sign (we are not sure why the buyers aren't sueing their realtor for his mistake).They were still told by the inspector that there was a well on the property during the inspection period and still continued to buy the house "as is". We do have this copy as well.

Now the county is asking them to have the well capped. Apparently that cost is $2000 dollars because that is what they are sueing us for. Their case is that they have to somehow prove that Josie and I knew about the well during our time living there (4 years). We are not sure how that would help them, that's what we were told from Sarah.

Josie has a coworker who has dealt with something similar in the past and recommended us a lawyer.

Is there any chance that Josie and I are responsible for not knowing there was a well on site before the inspector told all of us? And besides getting a lawyer, what actions should we take?
