Can A Police Report Where I Was The Victim Affect A Future Background Check?
I was the victim of an online scam involving people outside the U.S. They obtained personal/intimate images of me from a video call and attempted to scam/extort me.
I reported it to the police, provided the evidence I had, and cooperated with the investigation. I was never arrested, charged, cited, or considered a suspect. I was the person who filed the report and, as far as I know, I’m listed as the victim/complainant.
My concern is that the report will remain in law-enforcement records.
If I later apply for U.S. citizenship, a military position, federal employment, or a security clearance:
Could investigators find this report?
Would it appear on a criminal background check?
Could it negatively affect me simply because I filed the report?
If asked about law-enforcement contact, would I need to disclose it?
Has anyone been in a similar situation as a victim/complainant and later gone through a military or federal background investigation?
