Can Ex-employer Prohibit Me From Speaking With Ex-coworkers?
Location: MO
Work state is MO, state of residence is IL.
Got surprised with a “position elimination” this past Monday along with a separation agreement that included a severance. I was told verbally in that meeting not to talk to anyone from work. Two days later I had a FaceTime call with HR and asked her for clarification (recorded the call on my husband’s phone) and she said that I need to wait until June to talk to anyone (when severance runs out) if they will even “want to talk to me.”
Then, one of my employees texts me today completely unsolicited that leadership told them I am no longer with the company and falsely accused me of “going rogue” and doing whatever I wanted. Threatened all of my employees that they should not talk to me until the end of 2027 for “my benefit” and if I reach out to any of them that they are to let leadership and HR know. Is this legal? Is this something worth retaining an attorney for or should I just move on and let it go? I was going to attach a photo of the portion of the agreement about communications but the sub won’t let me.
If needed I can edit my post and type it out.
Thanks!
