Can I Turn Off The Internet In An Eviction Case?
Location: Sangamon County, IL
I am currently trying to evict the tenant renting my house for non payment of rent. This is my first time renting to someone and first time going through this process. I have been paying the internet since they’ve lived there but it’s not in the lease.
I’ve gotten a few notifications from Xfinity for “Notice of Action under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA)”. I’ve spoken to the tenant about this before and asked him to stop.
I got another notice from Xfinity a week ago. I filed for eviction 2/19/26 and we had our first court appearance today that was rescheduled for next Monday. Illinois has strict self eviction laws and turning off utilities can be seen as a self eviction. I’m afraid of getting in trouble because of the repeated offenses of him downloading movies illegally on my internet.
Can I restrict his access to the internet? Or would this possibly be seen as self help?
The tenant is making the process difficult and is trying to get the case dismissed already even though they are 3 months behind on rent which is why our first appearance today got continued to next week.
