Collection Agency Lied About A Lien On My House Because Of My Mom's Debt.
Location: Montana Hello, I just received a letter in the mail from a collection agency regarding a lien that was active on my house (not true) ama that I need to pay the debt. The letter was addressed to my mother who passed in 2021. Now, before she passed, we had a family lawyer help us with a quick deed transfer of her house to me as I'm an only child so when she passed, nothing went through probate as she didn't have any assets. I called the agency to let them know she had been deceased for almost 5 years and this was the first time I had heard anything about a debt she had. The lady on the phone repeated that there was a lien on my home and it needed to be repaid immediately. I said I would contact a lawyer for help and get back to her. I called the clerk and recorder for my county and they verified that there is no an hasn't ever been a lien on my house. Am I responsible for paying my mom's debt? Can they be held liable for lying about a lien being on house. For clarification, they didn't say they were going to put a lien, they said there was one. Thank you in advance.
