Could My Dog Get In Trouble For Attacking Someone Who Has Been Stalking And Harassing Me?
Location: Virginia Beach, Virginia.
I’ll try to keep this short, but there’s a guy in my apartment complex who’s been stalking me for months. It started over the summer when he tried flirting with me while I was at the pool with my family. We were just spending family time together and focusing on letting my baby nephew swim, but he kept approaching me. He even tried convincing me to go home or go somewhere else with him, which I obviously turned down. Since then, he’s continued bothering me, but lately, his behavior has gotten a lot more aggressive.
He’ll sometimes just stand outside our building, right in front of my apartment window. There are only six residents in our building, and we’re at the very end of the complex. The only other way out from our building leads to a highway, so it’s not like he’s just passing through.
A couple of days ago, while I was walking home from church, he came up behind me and started harassing me again, asking all kinds of creepy and personal questions. I tried to get away from him, but he kept following me all the way to my building. We’ve reported him to the apartment complex’s main office several times, but their response has basically been that he’s mentally ill.
At this point, I don’t go anywhere without my Doberman. I would never want her to attack someone or put her in a position where she has to defend me, but hypothetically, if he approached me again and became threatening, and she attacked to protect me, would she be legally protected under the law? I’m so paranoid
