Coworker Placed A Hidden Camera In Our Office. Our Bosses Are Reviewing The Footage Instead Of Security. Can We Make Them Give It To The Police Instead Or Request That They Not View Something We Didn't Give Consent For?
Location: Federal USA
A coworker hid a home security camera in our workplace (a government hospital) plugged into one of the government computers. No clue why it was placed, but another coworker found it when the coworker who placed it was OoO. Of note is that, while there are cameras all over the building, there are zero where we work because of patient privacy (note that patients don't enter our room, but we do discuss their information in it). Multiple coworkers and myself have submitted complaints against this action and how uncomfortable it makes us (we're women and he's the only man so we're unsure of the motive of the recordings. We were all friends who hung out outside of work with him before this and we were very shocked). The bosses were forced to move him for now because one coworker refused to come back to work if he wasn't.
Today we learned that the IT people were able to scan the computer and I guess videos were on it. This is where our problem comes up. These videos were taken without consent on a personal recording device. If anyone needs to review them, it should be the police or maybe IT. Instead, our boss and medical director are the ones reviewing them. These people are on his "side." Example: we had to beg for him to be moved somewhere else after the camera was found, have been told we're overreacting because it's not like the camera was in our bathroom, and told we should've never reported it outside of our department (aka to IT since it was plugged into the computer). This camera, per the videos, was placed on and off for YEARS in our workspace. While we don't know when or what was recorded, the thought came up that my coworkers and myself have said some pretty callous things about our bosses and their shitty management. Are they allowed to watch those videos when we didn't consent? Can they attempt to reprimand anyone because of words said on those videos? I don't think any coworkers did anything truly wrong, but who knows. I'm more disturbed that they get to watch the videos in the first place and would like to know if there is a legal reason to say why they can't.
Also, not all of us have a union to go to.
TLDR: Camera was placed by coworker in a place with no cameras inside hospital for years. Bosses are reviewing the videos instead of our security/police/IT. It makes me and my coworkers very uncomfortable that they're watching those videos instead of security or IT and we'd like to know if we can stop them.
