Due To A Layoff I Think My Cpap Rental Is Turning Into A Financial Nightmare.

Location: Seattle Washington

I'm going to try to keep this brief without missing any key details. Around April 2025 I was diagnosed with Severe Obstructive Sleep Apnea and prescribed an Airsense 11 Autoset CPAP device. I picked up and started using the device in June 2025. The agreement was for a 10 month rent to own, according to my paperwork. Since the original receival I have ordered an additional: headset, 3 masks, hose, and several filters. The machine retail price looks to only be valued at about $600-$1000 retail. Everything went as planned until December 2025. I was laid off from my job and lost my insurance. I've since started a new job and insurance starts next month but that's kind of irrelevant to this story. On February 11th 2026 I received a bill from my CPAP company for around $530 which said at the top that the total balance owed was that $530 that I was auto pay billed for. A few days later and I get a new bill trying to bill me an additional $660 saying that what I now owe is ~$1,195. I don't understand how I am being billed that much for a $700 machine that was being covered by my insurance for the last 8-9 months on a 10 month rent to own agreement. Even if this were the typical 13 month rental policy what I owe should have been paid in majority by my previous insurance. I attempted to go to the patient portal and find an itemized list or final price and all I can see is the bills for what they have already attempted to charge my credit card and the same quoted balance that's on the bill. There is an itemized list on the bills they sent me in the mail but they don't seem to account for the amount my insurance should have paid at all. According to my understanding I should be a couple hundred dollars away from owning this machine and yet I seem to be getting billed the full insurance adjusted rate for the machine and equipment? I've tried calling the billing department but since they are only open when I'm at work it's extremely difficult to deal with this, a 20 minute hold, and eat on a 60 minute lunch break. There is no email address on the bills so the only email address I've attained has been from the patient portal denying me from disabling auto pay there. I already sent an email to 3 of their departments requesting an itemized list of the billing including how much my insurance paid out and to be removed from auto pay. For those who want to read it I'll attach the email down below. Any advice would be appreciated.

URGENT: Billing Dispute & Revocation of Auto-Pay – Account [My Account Number]

To CPAP company Billing and Compliance: I am writing to formally dispute the current balance of $1,195.00 on my account and to revoke my authorization for automatic payments, effective immediately. I have attempted to disable Auto-Pay via your patient portal, but the system is blocking this action. Please consider this my formal written notice under Regulation E that I am revoking all electronic fund transfer authorizations. Any further attempts to debit my account will be reported to my financial institution as unauthorized. I am disputing the current balance based on the following: Equity of Rental: I have been in a Rent-to-Purchase agreement for this ResMed 11 since June 2025. I have completed 8–9 months of the 10-to-13-month ownership requirement. Under my original agreement, I am entitled to the "Insurance Allowed" rate for the remaining months of the rental. Overpayment: To date, I have billed approximately $1,195.00 toward this device and supplies. This amount meets or exceeds the fair market retail value of the machine. No Surprises Act Violation: As I am currently in a transition period between insurance coverages, I am legally entitled to a Good Faith Estimate (GFE) for any "Self-Pay" charges. I have not received a GFE, and the current $1,195.00 charge appears to be an arbitrary "retail" markup rather than a contractually obligated balance. I am requesting the following within five (5) business days: A full Itemized Ledger showing all payments made by myself and my previous insurance. A written Buyout Quote reflecting the remaining months of my capped rental at the previously established rate. Confirmation that Auto-Pay has been disabled. I am a resident of Washington State and am prepared to escalate this matter to the Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Division should these "cagey" billing practices and the blocking of auto-pay deactivation continue. I look forward to resolving this in writing. Sincerely,
