Dv And Custody Advice In Ny With A Newborn

I’m looking for advice from anyone who has experienced domestic violence and custody issues in New York

My husband has been verbally and emotionally abusive, including insulting me, calling me names, and making hurtful and intimidating comments. I recently had an emergency C-section, after which the abuse got even worse. Our daughter is only 6 weeks old. I’m trying to figure out how to protect myself and my baby and what my custody options are.

I have screenshots and voice recordings, but I haven’t filed a police report. He doesn’t let me sleep in our own room in the night, throwing me away to the couch, if I stay in the room, he trying to disturb my sleep by playing loud movies or watching TV very loud.

He told me we will be going to Family Court for me to explain why I don’t let him travel with his own daughter as he is the father.
He wants to travel with a 6-week-old baby without me, even though I am the primary caregiver: in 80% of the cases I wake up in the night, feed and change her. Baby is not completely breastfed: I pump my milk and give her the bottle as I want to make sure she eats enough (she sometimes falls asleep on the breast), but I breastfeed her at least once a day too. He only cleans her with wipes, while I slightly shower her when she poops in order to avoid wounds from wipes overuse. And every time she poops he would give her to me to take care of. He told me multiple times to put her in the crib if she cries, but she just wants to be held and cuddled .

He also told me multiple times that he will take his mom (who used to help us with the baby first, but then he sent her home) and our daughter and leave, which scares me.

For these reasons I can’t trust him traveling with her.

Has anyone been through something similar? How did you handle custody, and were you able to get primary custody and an order of protection? Any advice about finding a good family lawyer or free legal help would mean a lot. Please, please, please advice!
