Electronics Package Arrived Empty, Now Being Ghosted By Big Box Store. What Are My Options?
Location: Virginia
On Sunday, Feb 15, 2026 I ordered a small tech device in excess of $1,000 from Big Box electronics store using mostly gift cards obtained through credit card points. I paid the small amount of overage on the same credit card. The package arrived via major Express carrier on Feb 19 empty with what appeared to be an opened then retaped box.
I immediately reached out to Big Box store to explain the situation and have been getting the run around for days now. So far they have refunded me the small amount paid in excess on the credit card, but have not addressed the $1000 lost in gift cards spent on the item. The only communication from corporate has been one email asking for photos of the package. All of my other communication has been through in-person management at the local store where they are sympathetic, but can’t do anything.
I have time-stamped footage of the package being delivered through home security cameras as well as a text from Big Box store a minute later confirming delivery. I immediately retrieved the package from my doorstep and felt how light it was so when I opened it, I was recording it literally 3 minutes after delivery. The box was empty.
Now that I am being ghosted by Big Box store regarding the $1000, what is my next step? Do I file a police report? Do I go file something with the Express carrier? How do I get my money back here? Thank you for any advice you can provide.
