Employer Demanding Medical Release
Location: Wyoming
Howdy. I’m in the state of Wyoming. On Thursday I was scheduled to work and had a blood work appointment before. This was through the Wyoming health fair (low cost alternative to getting blood work at doctor). This was suggested by my doctor, saying she goes there herself because it’s so much cheaper. Whatever, I go in for the blood draw and I had a pretty vasovagal (?) reaction. I was unconscious for almost 4 minutes and my blood pressure got dangerously low. It eventually climbed high enough to be safe but they kept me there for an hour and a half before I could leave and made me get a ride from my partner. I’m ok but was out of it all day after this. Obviously I had no idea my day would take such a crazy turn so I called out of work. My boss was understanding of the situation and did not have a problem with me staying home for the day.
I went on with my weekend (it was my Friday).
Now today, my Sunday, HR is saying “Im reaching out to request a docs note to release you back to work. We want to ensure you are medically cleared and able to resume your normal duties. Are you able to send us a note before you return to work? Sadly, we cannot have you return till you show us a note from any licensed physician.“
The problem is, Wyoming Health Fair’s documentation of this event will not be in their system until it reaches Casper HQ in a few business days. And even then, they are not a healthcare provider. So I called an urgent care asking for a note that I’m cleared but they said since it’s been over 2 weeks since I’ve come in, I would need to come back in. So I have to pay urgent care to basically take my blood pressure and prove that I’m ok to work. And my actual doctor isn’t open until Monday.
In total I missed one day of work. And I have only called out one other day this whole year. It’s certainly not a habit.
For some additional context, I’m normally not scheduled on Thursday but have since been required to work a fifth day because the company doesn’t want to allow any full timers to do 4 days a week (even though it’s company policy that it’s allowed)
Does this seem like an intimidation tactic? It feels a bit insane. If I wasn’t fine, the blood draw people wouldn’t have cut me loose.
Edit: if I show up to work tomorrow will they fire me? Even if I clock in at 7 and go to the clinic across the street at 9 right when they open? It feels like a set up.. it’s givinngggg they think I was bs’ing this because I don’t wanna work and they want to play games because they think I am playing games.
