Facebook Marketplace Buyer Returned A Different Laptop And Payment App Sided With Them

Location: Georgia

I sold a used Lenovo laptop on Facebook Marketplace about 3 weeks ago for $650. It was in good working condition. I took photos of the serial number, the small dent on the left corner, the charger, and the laptop turned on showing the specs before meeting the buyer.

Buyer asked if I could accept payment through Cash App because he said he did not want to carry that much cash. I agreed. We met in a grocery store parking lot. He opened the laptop, checked it for maybe 5 minutes, logged into WiFi from his hotspot, and then sent the money. I gave him the laptop and charger.

About 10 days later he messaged me saying the laptop was overheating and randomly shutting off. I told him I had never had that issue and asked for a video. He sent a blurry video of a laptop turning off, but I could not see the serial number or the dent.

Two days after that, Cash App notified me there was a dispute. I submitted the chat, photos, and proof that he inspected it in person. Yesterday they said the dispute was decided in his favor and the funds were reversed.

Today I received a package from him with a laptop inside. It is the same general model, but it is not mine. Different serial number, no dent on the left corner, missing charger, and the screen has a crack near the hinge. I have photos comparing everything.

Cash App support is giving me generic responses and saying the dispute is closed.

Is this something I should file a police report for? Would small claims make sense if I have his name, address from the return label, messages, and photos? I’m not sure what the next step is or if this is just considered a marketplace risk.
