Faulty Home Construction Discovered
Location: Virginia
Home was built 15 years ago. Bought it 5 years ago. Recently discovered a leak in our home in the corner of an upstairs bedroom. Pulled up the carpet and saw that the water damage caused the sub floor to rot out and there is a small hole. We contacted a contractor to repair the floor and repair the leak. Contractor quoted a price but when they came to do the job they discovered the damage was far more extensive than previously thought. The damage inside the walls has rotted out a support beam. Extensive repairs are needed. They suggested we file an insurance claim.
We filed the insurance claim and the insurance adjuster denied the claim, stating that the leak was caused by faulty building construction. Supposedly there was evidence at some point someone noticed the issue and tried to patch it up on the cheap which ended up making the situation worse.
We are at a loss of what to do. This is going to wipe us out. We basically have to rebuild our house because it was poorly constructed from the jump.
We will be contacting an attorney but I’m not even sure what specialty to look for. And would we be looking at suing the builder, the inspector we used at the time of the closing, the sellers we bought the house from, etc.? Just at a loss of what to do.
