Fire Extinguisher Replacement

Card image cap

Location: Texas

Hello! My apartment did a fire extinguisher check yesterday, and I realized that I didn’t have a fire extinguisher in my unit. I contacted them and let them know that I didn’t have a fire extinguisher. Now they are charging me $70 to replace the fire extinguisher. To my knowledge, our apartment never had one. We’ve only been here about 6 months so this is our first fire extinguisher check, thus why we’re just now noticing we don’t have one. They are basically claiming that we lost it, as they keep telling us to “look harder”. I asked for the inventory/condition paperwork they completed before we moved in but they have now denied me that paperwork twice. What can I do? I simply can’t afford to pay $70 for a fire extinguisher that never existed. I feel as if I’m being taken advantage of. Any help or legal advice is appreciated!!

Note: we left the “fire extinguisher” section blank on our move-in condition paperwork, which they say that’s when I should’ve let them know we didn’t have one. I just didn’t even think about that on move-in day though.
