Former Roommate Owes $730 Rent, Moved States, I’m Abroad. What Are My Options?
Location: Maryland (lease), roommate now in Georgia
Hi, looking for advice about a small civil money dispute.
My former roommate and I were both international students (F-1) and co-tenants on a lease in Maryland. In 2024 I covered his share of one month’s rent ($730) to prevent default after he had a medical emergency and could not afford to pay that month. He asked via WhatsApp for temporary help, and I agreed he would repay me once financially stable.
I have written messages where he acknowledges the debt and asks for extensions, saying he would repay me after getting a job.
He has since moved to Atlanta, Georgia, stopped responding, and blocked me on WhatsApp. I’m currently outside the US and would prefer not to escalate to a full lawsuit if possible.
I still have:
• the lease documents showing both our names • proof I paid the rent • WhatsApp messages acknowledging the debt • Splitwise records What steps can I realistically take? Is there any option that doesn’t involve going to court? Given legal costs, should I just let it go?
Thanks in advance.
