Former Student Co-founder Kicked Me Off An App Project And Is Now Demanding I Sign A Post-hoc Nda. What Are My Options?
Hey everyone, looking for some perspective on a messy situation from a university startup module.
I’m a dual Business/CS major. A few weeks ago, I joined a team of 6 students to build a ride-sharing app concept for class. I brought technical knowledge and spent time brainstorming core features and product architecture with the team.
Once the class module ended, the "lead" business major texted the group saying he, the designer, and the marketer were taking the project forward as a trio, effectively kicking the rest of us out.
Immediately after dropping us, he sent a blank NDA asking us to sign away all IP rights and promise not to compete. There was no financial compensation, equity, or formal company formed and just a demand over WhatsApp.
When I pointed out that asking someone to sign an NDA for nothing makes no sense, he threatened that refusing to sign meant I was acting in "bad faith" and would be treated as a direct competitor.
Honestly, I already run another business and have my hands full , so I’m not even planning to build a competing app. But the pushiness and legal threats felt absurd, so I sent a sarcastic reply with a payment QR code to prove a point. He hasn't stopped stressing about IP since.
