Getting My Belongings Back From Police After My Roommate Was Charged
Location: North Carolina
I'll try to make this very simple:
My male roommate was charged for using his devices to aid in criminal activity. He had his stuff taken. The police also took my computer and my iPad, because my roommate did have access to those things, but he didn't USE them. He simply had access to them.
My items were taken and investigated and found clean. They initially were saying that I would get my belongings back once he went to trial and was charged. He has already been fully charged and prosecuted convicted, as of two weeks ago.
Now the police station suddenly has no answers and the phone clerks "don't know" anything when I ask about getting MY belongings back (again, they are not his).
I am taking up legal action, considering filing a civil claim to get my stuff back. Before I go that far, is there another course of action I should take? Am I simply not waiting long enough before they give my stuff back. I would hate for them to "forget" about it and then weeks later, I am still hurting and wanting for my stuff and they don't know where it is anymore.
