Got A Call About My Dad’s Credit Card Debt Today

Card image cap

Location: Colorado, US

I’m 19 years old, turning 20 in June. My dad and my mom got divorced about 10 years ago, it was messy and my dad’s proven to be a really horrible sport about it. He moved away in August of 2023, he’s either in Virginia or Florida.

I got a call this morning from collections about a credit card being $2000+ in debt. I told her she had the wrong person, I’ve never had a credit card in my life. Only debit cards, and the bank she was calling from I haven’t used since October last year. She asked if so and so was my father, and I said yes. She told me apparently he joint-signed me on the card.

The issue is the card was opened in 2018. I was 13 years old at the time. I don’t have any memory of this card being opened, the only card I did open jointly with him I’ve completely stopped using years ago and it was a debit card.

She said she’ll call me back after double checking everything, could it just be an error in the system or is he trying to shove the debt onto me? If so what can I do about it?
