Got Arrested For Missing Court For Crime I Did Not Do.

Location: Virginia, USA

This has been resolved, but just wanted to share my little experience here.

Long story short, March 19th, officers show up to my house with an arrest warrant for me. It was for a missed court date(which I had no idead about). And the charge was petty larceny! So, for the first time ever in my life, I have handcuffs on me and being arrested. The process was almost two hours. I went and spoke with the magistrate at a station at our county's courthouse. I was released on summons, and given a new court date.

A couple of days later, I go back to the court and get the original summons, which gave the details of my supposed crime. It was at a Macy's at a local mall. At that point I was very sure, that it was actually my brother that had done the actual crime. He has been arrested for shoplifting in the past, and even as recent as this past summer and fall.

Anyways, the court date for the crime above was on March 10th. Again, I had no idea about this, and of course did not go. My brother did come home on January 24th and 25th, but did not say anything about this. Anyways, he was arrested on January 26th, for missing a court date.

So, what happened was, he had been arrested at the Macy's for shoplifting, and when arrested..he wrote down my information instead of his own(my first and last name, date of birth, even my SS#) on the court summons. The only thing he couldn't do was my signature, so for that I think he put his own.

So, this past Friday (March 27th) the original arresting officer comes back to work, and I'm able to talk with him and explain what happened. He has me send my ID. He then shows me an image(probably from the Macy's cameras or police station cameras), and asked if I know who it was. I explained it was my brother who was already in custody. After a few minutes, he texts me back saying that he will have the charges against me dropped, and remove it from my record. He even says for me to let me know if I have any problems...
