Got In A Hit And Run Two Days Ago, Called To File A Police Report And The Cop Was Discouraging Me From Filing
Location: Houston, Texas. Incident.
I'm not sure if i should still proceed. The damage wasn't major, just a bent license plate and frame (haven't checked internally but I doubt there's damage.)
I called earlier to file a report but the cop was discouraging me from filing saying it might not be worth it. He said my insurance would go up even though I am not liable and even if I don't report it myself, they would still raise my premium. I asked if the hit and runner would at least get a ticket or something and he went on about if the damage is less than $1000, he initially said it would not go through once he files it but later changed it to "I'm not sure what happens if I answer "no" to the report's question of 'is the damage less than $1000?'"
The whole conversation was so confusing because every time I ask him if the other person would get a ticket or have it on their record, he would circle back to the fact that the damage is less than $1k and he can't file a crash report. Whole time he sounded so fed up and pissed that I'm not letting it go, it literally feels like I'm talking to my brother not a cop.
He then called the hit and runner and he told me that they admitted to it. I told him i'll let him know my decision next week (within 10 days) and he said "why not now?", it's just back and forth of conversations like this
Should i proceed? Can i ask another cop to handle this case lol. I dont expect any type of reimbursement, i just want the other person to get some type of ticket/record
