Government Slapped 30k+ Debt On My Mom After Her Sister’s Death. Anything We Can Do?
Location: AB, Canada
Back in October 2024 my aunt had unfortunately passed away. Shortly after her death my mother received a notice from the government stating that my aunt owed well over 30k in business taxes, etc, from a business that her and my aunt owned together almost a decade ago. My mother had no idea, as she had left the business to my aunt when she got another job (roughly 2017/18). When she left, the company was already owing the government, however over the years my mother had worked very hard (having 2 full time jobs at the same time) to pay off her side of debt and everything that she owed to the government, and was under the impression her sister was doing the same.
But no, my aunt never bothered to properly pay it off and it spiralled out of control, none of us knowing or finding out until after her death. Now the government is demanding my mom pay the full amount, and is threatening to garnish her paycheques until it is. They are taking nearly $600 bi weekly, over 1/3 of her pay. We’re going to loose our car, potentially our home. We are low income with no savings, so loosing 1200$ a month has impacted our quality of life in a very bad way.
Is there anyway to fight this or anything we can do at all? For people that have been through this, how did you manage?
