Gym Membership Cancellation

Card image cap

Okay, this is less serious than most but I’m curious about it.

Location: WI

I had a gym membership that I’d been meaning to cancel (just didn’t love it, I moved and it’s no longer close to me) but hadn’t because you had to go in and their hours are very inconvenient for my work schedule.

They sent out at email on 10/9 saying they were closing and all billing was cancelled.

Thinking my problem was solved, I went out and joined a different gym.

On 10/13, the original gym emailed again saying a new owner would be taking over, so they’re staying open.

I responded saying I would still like to cancel since I joined a new gym based on their original message, and now they’re once again saying I have to cancel in person.

Shouldn’t their email saying the payment was cancelled invalidate my contract? Or is that wishful thinking on my part?

I can go in and do it but these practices really aggravate me, and I’m more intellectually curious than anything.
