How Can I Get Out Of My Lease If I Suspect My Roommate Of Stealing From Me And I Have Videos Of Her Going Through My Room

ORIGINAL TITLE: I put a camera in my bedroom because I suspected my roommate stole from me and today I caught her snooping through all my stuff

So last night she found the camera while going through my stuff again, all of our roommates are taking her side, I have told the landlord, and I will be going to the police today. The main advice I’m looking for is how to get out of my lease because I no longer feel welcome/safe there.

Heres the long version. So the reason I didn’t confront her initially was because my parents wanted me to actually catch her on camera stealing so we had true evidence to pursue charges. And honestly I never trusted telling the roommates before I confronted her because they’re both far closer to her than me.

Yesterday I was leaving for the gym and 5 minutes after I leave I get the notification that she is in my room. I pull on the side of the road and watch the video. She was in my room for 10 minutes going through all of my stuff. This time she picked up my other prescription medications in my desk drawer and read each label. She then looked through other parts of my room (school bag, my brand new camera, my trash, etc). Then she goes to my fridge and at this point the only thing in it are 5 drinks and my medication. She takes the bag out and opens each. individual. bag. and goes through it. Safe to say I was pissed the fuck off. So she goes to leave my closet and sees the camera. Her face literally drops she looked so fucking guilty and she calls for her boyfriend to come in my room. Then I lose connection to my camera because she turned off the wifi to it from her app (she set up wifi) and then she goes and turns around my echo show which also has a camera on it. I have no idea what she did in my room over that period.

So I rush home to go confront her because she found out about the camera and knew she was caught, but her car is gone. She literally ran away. So I go in my car and she posts this vague thing about me on her story. This is how I found out she told my roommates. So I call one of them asking what the story is about and she straight up lies to my face.

(I just realized I need a better way to refer to each of the roommates so im gonna refer to them as T for thief and R1 and R2 for other girls)

T texts me and curses me out, which is the only communication I have gotten from her so far. So then I text our roommate group chat all of the videos of her in my room.

This is what I said: “so i have had $250 worth of shit go missing from my room. i noticed this on labor day. so i put a camera in my room. so do we wanna explain why i have multiple videos of you going through everything in my room? including reading my medications and my fridge which holds more meds? if i dont get my shit returned i will be filing a police report and i will be sending these videos to our landlord. i will literally forget about this if i get my stuff back. and if you weren’t stealing from me i would like to know why when u noticed the camera you turned the wifi off on it and turned around my alexa”

Long story short both other roommates go immediately defending her (and talking for her) and come up with the bullshit reasons as to why she was going through my stuff like “she was concerned about the meds you were taking and wanted to make sure it was safe” “a police report isn’t necessary” “she was curious about what medication you were taking” “why were you filming everyone who unknowingly came in the room without telling us” “why are you blaming us for something none of us did” “she was taking her own shit back”. It was all just a bunch of bullshit, the only person I accused was T. They didn’t care that she completely invaded my privacy nor did they care about that she probably went through their stuff too. I honestly knew they would have this reaction, she is so highly manipulative and I’m just done with her.

Now to the main point of my post. I no longer want to live there, but I don’t know if I’m able to get out of my lease for this or if I’d be responsible for the rent. I know I should stand my ground and make them think idgaf, but I dont want to live somewhere that I dont feel welcome at all. I have told my landlord of the situation, of course he hasn’t responded. I moved all my valuables to my house in my hometown by the way. Does anyone know how to go about breaking a lease? Let me know if you need any more information about my situation

ps: I informed the girl she stole from in the past and I think she is going to the police too.
