How Do I Deposit Checks For Deceased Parent?

Card image cap

My Location: Missouri

Mom’s Location: Kentucky

My mother passed away October, 2025. She had a vehicle loan and was the only name on the title. She also had various add-on policies when she made the purchase.

Because the value of the car and her other assets were less than $30,000, the state of Kentucky allows for me as the only child to file a petition to dispense with administration. This court order allowed me to sell the car.

After the sale of the car, I have received refund checks from the various add-on policies, overpayment on the loan, and from her auto insurance policy. They are all made payable in her name and amount to about $4000.

My mother and I had a joint bank account with U.S. Bank, however, I had her name removed from the bank account in December because everything about settling her affairs was resolved… At least I thought so. U.S. Bank says they cannot accept the court order that I have. They will only accept a letter of testamentary, which means I need to also do probate. But there’s nothing for me to probate.

I already spent $750 on a lawyer to help me with getting the court order to sell the car and even paid an extra $250 to have an amended court order so that the checks could be added as assets on the order. U.S. Bank still won’t help.

What do I do and where do I go from here? I have attempted to reach out to the attorneys office who assisted with the petition and they are unresponsive.
