I, 17m, Was Assaulted. Is It Worth It To Initiate A Minor Assault Case?
Location: VA
For context. I was officiating a U16 soccer game as the sideline (assistant) referee back in early September. I raised my flag as soon as I saw the ball go out. From the spectators perspective, it seemed like the ball was in. However, from my POV it was clearly out. The opponet team quickly played the ball in and scored a goal last minute. One of the players got really pissed and said “the ball wasn’t out ref.” I replied “it was”.
A parent on the sideline ran towards me and said I cursed at his child, and so he started pushing me, wanting to fight me. I was pushed 2 times before another adult stopped him. I have a beard, which may make it look like im an adult, but I have a special badge which indicates I am under 18, which I know will come to my advantage in a legal situation. Now, being so panicked by that situation, I immediately went to my car and left, fearing I may get jumped by the team or something.
I didnt call the police, nor file a police report or tell my parents about it. The only thing I did was tell the league about what happened, and they investigated and got the guy banned from spectating for 3 months. There is no video footage of the guy actually pushing me, but there were witnesses (coaches, spectators, etc).
Is it worth it to persue legal action currently? I do realize I’ve made a very big mistake both by not filing a police report and not informing my parents sooner.
