I An About To Ask My Employer To Shorten My Shifts And Make Accommodations For My Epilepsy, Please Help.
Location: Tennessee
I currently work 12 hours on night shift 3 to 4 times a week.
My epilepsy, that hasn't been an issue in years, is worsening. My 2hr commute plus back to back 12s on nights is causing me to lose sleep, and stress, thus worsening my condition.
There was a time in the past that I made a 10 hr schedule for myself and my employer said they would place me on it "temporarily." I requested this schedule due to my epilepsy and lack of sleep. I believe my having epilepsy was only mentioned via word-of-mouth, and email. They wound up taking me off of it for some monetary corporate reason after around 5 months of working it.
Sadly my opposite shift does not need me to come onto it, as it will be fully staffed very soon. My employers will likely find it unreasonable if I make up a shift to put myself on. I understand if they are not able to accommodate, and if I have no legal footing.
I did not admit to a disability before taking this job, because it's never impaired my ability to work, but my superiors are aware of my condition. This is all incredibly embarrassing and makes me feel weak.
My doctor is more than willing to write me a letter requesting 10 hour shifts, even including a request for remote work (which I doubt could be accomplished due to the technology we require).
What is my best bet? Do I need to fill something out online before I go through all of this trouble with them? Do I need to contact the ADA? I appreciate the help in advance.
