I Believe My Father Is Withholding Social Security Survivor Benefits Checks

Location: Utah

My mother died when I was 16, and I received a check a few months later for approximately 2,000 dollars. I now know that this and the other checks that I supposedly got (I never saw the other checks) were Survivor Benefits checks. I’m 26 now, and my father told me that he’d give that money to me when I was in college. I went to college and never received that money.

To make a long story short, we’re no contact now. He never communicated that he needed to use the money for me or someone or something else. I don’t think he’d have a reason to use it because he had a pretty good job at the time. He’s broken promises before and had done some legally questionable things. I fear he’s already spent the money, and that it was misused. He’s not above gaslighting me about things I don’t fully know/remember.

My question is: should I try to ask him about it before I report it? Or should I just report it? How would he go about proving that he didn’t misuse it? Is there anything i should know/provide when doing this? I don’t have proof, will that be an issue?

I feel I’m entitled to this money, and could use it for good. Any help is appreciated.
