I Now Owe $18k Because My Mom Forced Me To Stay In The Mental Hospital For An Extra 7 Days Even Though I Was Mentally Fine, How Do I Go About This?
Location: California
For context I am 22F in California, I live with my mom and attempted suicide in march, I was instantly given a 5150 (72 hour hold) in a mental hospital. However after the 72 hours was over, I was told I was moved up to a 5250 (14 day hold) because my mother told the social worker I wasn’t allowed to go home and therefore they couldn’t release me despite every doctor saying I seemed fine mentally. After 10 days I was able to weasel out and be able to leave early on the agreement that I would stay in a hotel for a couple days until I started a residential treatment program as I was on a waitlist. Because those extra 7 days were not necessary and only happened due to my mom telling the social workers I wasn’t allowed home, it was deemed medically unnecessary and insurance is refusing to pay for it leaving me with a bill of over $18k. I’m getting kicked out in 4 months and have no way to pay for this and am frustrated as I fought EVERY day to be let out yet they only listened to my mother. I know if I tell her she will pin this on me but do I have any legal way out of this as I was held against my will?
