I’ve Become The Sole Provider For My Household Of 4 Adults And I Don’t Know What To Do
Location: Ohio
After my parents passed away, my siblings and I inherited their house. The mortgage was paid off at the time of their deaths. There were originally 5 of us, but my oldest sister bought out another sibling. As of now, there are 4 of us on the deed. My oldest sister owns 2/5, and I and my 2 youngest siblings each own 1/5. My 2 youngest siblings are developmentally disabled, and my oldest sister is their guardian. She was also the beneficiary of my parents life insurance policy, which was a sizable six-figure amount. She has not been employed in the last 3 years since our parents passed.
Around March, she told me that the remaining money from her bank account (around 90k) had been stolen by people overseas. She said she contacted her bank and the police, but as far as I know, she has not recovered any substantial amount of the money. She has no income. I was under the impression that she was receiving social security checks for my 2 youngest siblings, but she says they keep denying her because she fills out the paperwork incorrectly. She doesn't want to get them jobs yet because it will affect the amount of money they get for social security.
So, for the past 6 or 7 months, I have effectively been the sole provider for 4 adults. My sister has only started seriously looking for work within the last month, and so far has only made it to the interview stages. She owes me close to $15k and I have been dipping into my savings to financially support everyone.
Quite frankly, I want to leave. This is not sustainable for me. However, I’m not sure as an owner of the house what I will be legally obligated to pay/be responsible for if I leave. I suggested selling the house and going our separate ways but she seemed resistant to the idea. If she refuses to sell the house, and I move out, what am I legally responsible for in terms of the 1/5 of the house that is mine? Furthermore, if she does not pay the bills, which I’m certain she will not be able to do on her own without me or my siblings social security checks, where does that leave me and the house? How do I get out of this situation? What can I do to protect myself?
