I Was Dismissed From My Program 3 Weeks Before Graduation

Card image cap

Hey! I don't even know where to begin honestly. I was literally kicked out of my program for not submitting my resume before my exit exam.

While I was at my practicum rotation I received an email from my dean that I will be receiving a course failure for not submitting paperwork.

Confused I asked what didn't I submit as I'm on top of everything. To my surprise I received an email from a professor 3 days before my dismissal stating the resume (in which turning it in for review was optional )is now a requirement. Essentially I was given a pass or fail assignment via email with a 51 hour deadline.

Keep in mind the syllabus and rubric does not state that submitting my resume is a requirement.

I asked my dean for a call and understanding and she claims that I've been told multiple times to submit my resume. Which is not true, It was only suggested to turn in my resume for review. It was never an assignment until 7/28 with a due date of 7/30, in which I was dismissed on 7/31.

I spoke with the campus president and he is upholding my dismissal.

I am going to attempt to send one final email to the president and any other higher up as a final attempt. Any suggestions or guidance is welcomed.

I will be blocking out names and personal information as It's not in my intention to harass anyone. Included in this email are exhibits of email communication which I can't upload but for every exhibit there is a screenshot of the "multiple times" I've been told to submit a resume

Greetings,

My name is .........., and I am a nursing student in the ASN program at the ..........

I am writing to formally escalate an appeal regarding my dismissal from the program on July 31st, as I have already gone through the campus-level review and the decision

was upheld by ........

I want to lay out the documented timeline of this requirement, because I believe a preparation

step was redefined into a graded, dismissal-triggering requirement with almost no notice.

[Exhibit 1]

On July 13th, .............., Director of Career Services, emailed nursing seniors about an upcoming AdventHealth mock panel interview scheduled for August 3rd. This email lists the graded expectations under the heading "Remember a few things since this is for your grade,"

which includes bringing several copies of a resume and cover letter to the interview itself. Separately, and after this graded list concludes, the email adds: "Remember to send us your resume for critiques ahead of time." This request is structurally and visually distinct from the graded list above it, and is explicitly framed as being for critique and feedback, not grading. Sending the resume to ......... ahead of time was therefore presented as a

courtesy step for feedback, separate from the graded requirements of the mock interview itself.

[Exhibit 2]

On July 15th, Professor........ emailed nursing seniors about an upcoming AdventHealth mock panel interview scheduled for August 3rd. This email asked students to send an updated resume to ....... by July 22nd "so she can review it and you have time to revise if necessary." The email also stated generally that the mock interview "will count for your assignment in practicum." Read in context, this framed sending the resume to .............. as

preparation and feedback ahead of the graded event, not as a graded submission in itself. This reading is supported by the official Mock Interview Rubric (Pass/Fail), which lists the resume criteria as "students arrived with 3 copies of most updated resume", meaning the graded requirement was bringing physical copies to the interview on August 3rd, not a prior digital submission to .........

[Exhibit 3]

This reading is further supported by the official Mock Interview Rubric (Pass/Fail), which lists the resume criteria as "students arrived with 3 copies of most updated resume", meaning the graded requirement was bringing physical copies to the interview on August 3rd, not a prior

digital submission to ............ This is also consistent with the recollection of my classmates, several of whom have agreed to provide signed statements confirming that prior to July 28th, submitting the resume to ......... was communicated as a suggestion for

feedback, not a graded requirement.

[Exhibit 4]

On July 28th, Professor ...... sent a "Final Reminder" email stating that resumes must be received by ...... by Thursday, July 30th at 5pm, and that failure to do so would result in an automatic failing grade in both the Mock Interview and the co-requisite Concepts course,

with no exceptions. This was the first time the resume submission itself, separate from the interview, was defined as a standalone pass/fail gate with this consequence attached. I want to note that the July 28th email references a prior 'reminder announcement' sent on July15th. I have no record of a Blackboard announcement on that date. The only July 15th communication I received was an email from Professor .......... [Exhibit 2], which is

consistent with ......... July 13th email, referenced sending a resume for feedback and

revision ahead of the interview, not as a graded submission requirement. I also have no record of

a graded July 22nd deadline communicated through Blackboard, email, or the course syllabus

prior to July 28th

[Exhibit 5]

In my communication with ......., I was told her decision would be final, as I had been instructed "multiple times" to submit my resume because it was part of my Mock Interview grade. The documentation does not support this characterization.

The official Mock Interview Rubric does not list submitting a resume to ........ as a scoring criteria; the graded requirement was arriving with three physical copies at the interview itself. Prior to July 28th, every communication referencing the resume framed it as feedback and

preparation, not as a graded submission. The July 28th email from Professor ........ was the only communication that redefined the pre-interview submission to ......... as its own standalone, pass/fail requirement, separate from the interview, with a deadline of July 30th at 5pm.

I was given this redefined requirement approximately 51 hours before the deadline, three weeks

before my scheduled graduation. A single email introducing a new pass/fail consequence with 51

hours' notice does not constitute being instructed "multiple times.

I want to briefly note my standing outside of this issue. Throughout my practicum, I have received job offers in three separate units, MedSurg, PCU, and ICU. Charge nurses, staff nurses, nursing managers, and the AdventHealth student coordinator across all three units are willing to provide letters or statements attesting to my clinical integrity, consistency, and work ethic. I can

also provide a letter of recommendation from the HR director at my practicum site, as well as references from leadership, including a CEO, CNO, and multiple physicians and nurse practitioners, at two facilities where I have worked for over a year.

In three years at ......., this is the first time I have raised a concern or requested reconsideration of any decision. I am requesting a fair review of the documentation above, and I am confident that the record both in this matter and throughout my time in the program supports

that request.

Given this documentation, I am respectfully requesting that your office reconsider the dismissal

decision and reinstate me in the program so that I may complete the mock interview and graduate

as scheduled. I am available to discuss this by phone at your earliest convenience and can

provide any additional documentation your office may need.

If you made it this far thank you very much! And any suggestions would mean the world to me.
