Is There Any Recourse?

Posting for my sister since she doesn't have Reddit.

Location: Colorado

My sister and her fiance signed a contract with their wedding venue back in October. When they signed they were informed by the venue that the venue was considering selling and were assured that if they did sell it would be written into the selling contract that the new owners must honor the contract that my sister had just signed. Fast forward to now, beginning of January, and my sister and her fiance were just told that the owners had sold the venue and that the new owners would be closing for renovations until November. Meaning that they would be unable to honor the contract to hold my sister's wedding in September. There is nothing in the written contract about being held liable for honoring the contract with the new owners, it was just a verbal agreement. Now my sister and her fiance are scrambling to try and find a new venue that will be able to host on the same date and are out at least $300 or so for the invitations they already got that now have the wrong address and possibly the wrong date. is there anything that they can do to try and recoup not only the money they lost for the invitations but the money that they will likely incur in additional costs trying to find a new venue? One of the biggest reasons that they signed with the venue was that it had plenty of parking for all of the guests and on site suites for the wedding party to stay in. Most all of the other venues that she has been able to find that have openings would need a shuttle service because they don't have the on-site parking and/or they do not have the on-site suites for the wedding party. Is there anything they can do? additionally, the original venue is being sketchy about sending them their refund check for the deposit they paid.
