Landlord Invoiced Me For Pest Control
Location: South Dakota
Hi all.
For reference, I live on the 3rd floor of a 24-unit apartment complex.
About a month ago, my wife found a small roach in our apartment. We crushed it and, per our lease agreement, reported it to the landlord. I set out six traps around the apartment the next day just in case there was a bigger problem.
One month later, we hadn't seen nor caught another. We then received a text out of the blue from the landlord that she had called an exterminator. I told her we hadn't seen any more roaches and I then asked if it would cost me anything. She didn't respond to my question but informed us that there was another report of 1 roach being seen on the 3rd floor.
They sprayed and, according to the report, didn't see any "evidence of roach activity." The landlord then invoiced us for $201. The wording in our contract says that "Residents with bug infestation may be responsible for the expense and/or continued expense of exterminating."
Is there anything I can do about this? I know it doesn't seem like a lot but we don't have a ton of money and this is a huge bummer for both my wife and I.
Thanks for any advice!
