Landlord Will Not Provide Keys

Hi, I have been a paying tenant for this residence since the end of August. It is a shared house with eight bedrooms, there are 10-13 roommates in the house. When my boyfriend and I moved in, the landlord told us one of the other tenants would be providing us a copy of our bedroom key and the house key. It’s been several months and we have never received either. I bugged the landlord about it for a couple of months in the beginning, and would tell me “Oh, (Roommates name) will be giving you the keys today,” yet never receiving them. I have never even met this roommate formally. I also struggle to communicate with most of my roommates since a lot of them speak a a different language. We have been entering the house through the sliding glass door in our bedroom that is in the gated backyard. Recently it has bee raining and the door is hard to open.

My landlord recently held a house meeting discussing some issues tenants have brought up. He asked did I had any problems and I brought up my keys. He told me he would get right on it. A few days later he texts me and sends me a screenshot of the last time I had asked for keys and he told me that the roommates were going to give me that keys that day and I replied “sounds good” nothing else. He is claiming that is proof that I received the keys and told me that if I just lost them then it’s on us to get them back. I told him we never received the keys. He never responded. I feel uncomfortable asking him for the keys because right now my boyfriend is in the transition period between two jobs and we’re still waiting on his check. So because of that we’re 800$ late on rent this month. I don’t feel like that should affect our right to keys though. Is this legal for my landlord to withhold giving us keys?
