Lease Issues - Chicago

Card image cap

Location: Chicago

I currently live in an apartment in Chicago, have been here since 2023. The property management company has been attempting to sell the building (2 flat with a coach house) to another management company for years unsuccessfully. My lease is up 3/31, it was told to us in January the lease would not be renewed as the building is being torn down.

As you all know, rent pricing is higher than ever (especially in Chicago). I rely on public transit to get to work, making apartment searching more difficult. My husband and I found a place that would work well within our price range, lease starting 3/1. We spoke to our leasing agent at our current place to request an early end to our lease on 3/1 so that we can afford to move then, and were told we would have to pay a buyout of 2x the rent.

Frankly, I think this is just a greedy asshole move. We are being booted out so they can make millions selling the building as a tear down in an ideal neighborhood, and they can’t even do the kindness of letting us out one month early. Is there ANY legal recourse that can be taken here? Thank you in advance!
